Split Rock Lighthouse Clockwork Mechanism
The Split Rock Lighthouse is one of the few lighthouses in the country that still has a functioning clockwork mechanism to rotate their 3rd order bi-valve lens. A reproduction clockwork was manufactured as an interpretive exhibit for their museum to allow visitors to experience how the clockwork functions and how they were used to rotate lenses before electricity.

I love that care was taken to match the color of the original glass. I use 3D graphics software out of personal interest, and the apperance and feel, if you will, of a material, really makes all the difference in the world. I imagine that the refractive index of acrylic is very different from the glass that was originally used and I really appreciate the effort put into the design of these lenses to match the original appearance.

I would like to produce one of these lenses as well, I am hooked. I would like to get one done with real glass. Does anybody know if that is possible. Glass can be cut with water jets I believe but only straight cuts rather than curved cutting. I imagine they had iron cast forms where the glass was put during manufacturing to get the rounded shape. I guess after that they simply cut the prisms into smaller pieces. Does anybody know if the acrylic prisms can also be produced in real glass? Surly they must be a way of doing this`?

The rotation rollers are of no use here, because this optics is designed for a horizon light and not for a rotating flashing light All those who would challenge my comment would be absolutely wrong, I know perfectly well the operation of lighthouse's optics😊

Hi Dan, (this is a copy of an email I sent to you earlier today) I was born in Harlingen Texas in 1962. As a child, our family were regulars at South Padre Island - before the Queen Isabella Causeway was built. The historic Port Isabel Lighthouse was a regular site and occasional stop for our family - as we made our way to Padre Island. Throughout my life, I have been infatuated with lighthouses throughout the U.S. and the world. An inspiration no doubt due to my love for our PI Lighthouse. I enjoy reading about the history of the many lighthouses throughout the world and how they helped navigate for those reliant upon their shining lights. I have to say, when a friend of mine provided details of a future installation of a 3rd Order Fresnel Lens for our beloved historic Port (Point) Isabel Lighthouse last year - I was beyond thrilled! So deserved in my humble opinion. Fast forward. My wife and I quickly made arrangements to attend the lighting ceremony in Port Isabel on December 9th 2022. We arrived early that day, secured a hotel on the island and arrived about two-hours prior to the ceremony starting. The dedication was nothing short of spectacular. The lens? No words Dan. What an amazing job Artworks Florida Classic Fresnel Lenses, LLC did for our cherished lighthouse. I could not believe my eyes as we watched her light-up that night with that remarkably beautiful lens that your company created. Thank you for doing such a spectacular job. If I had it my way, I would move my wife into the Keepers Cottage House on the grounds just to see her each day and night. As you know, it was 117 years in the making. I cannot begin to tell you how much happiness your creation from AFCFL, LLC has had upon the community. Especially for those of us that grew up in the Rio Grande Valley and passed by her on each trip to the island. She’s been through a lot over the years. Now, with many dollars spent on her restoration over the years - she shines again in all of her glory with her beautiful Fresnel lens. Thank you again for your amazing work. Mark Tate Off The Ground Photography ~ San Antonio, Texas (By the way, I am an FAA licensed drone pilot. I shot the video you see from the 5:19 - 6:02 mark on the video link on your website. I shared it “publicly” on my @parrotheadstx UA-cam channel. Here is the unedited link if you care to see the entire thing. I am presently working on an edit properly. I am so honored to see portions of my video on the ceremonial video link. Thank you. ua-cam.com/video/6GCynFJ6TDc/v-deo.html)
